The Detox Process - Vacation Edition.

Most people think the detox process for vacations start when you get home, after all the sugar, carbs, alcohol and fun are over. But for me, it starts when I arrive on vacation.

Last week we were on a cruise with my family. It was really an amazing trip, loved spending time with everyone and having a great time. For me, the detox is stress and technology. It takes me at least 2 days to let the stress go and stop checking my email, the news, social media. Once that is done, I can finally relax.

The next few days, I overindulged like most do on a cruise. We had a full breakfast each day, some sort of lunch and a multicourse dinner. My 12 year old son truly enjoyed breakfast - he would order and eat waffles, vanilla french toast, a fruit plate, American bacon, English Bacon, pork sausage and multiple glasses of orange juice. Lunches were at the sushi restaurant on board with the best rolls and spicy seafood ramen soup, or the buffet. On the islands, we had big lunches with mahi mahi - grilled and in fish tacos, side pasta salads and fries. Dinner was just over the top.

In the main restaurants, I indulged in, well, a lot. For example, if you can't decide what to get, get both! I would get coquilles saint jacques and french onion soup, followed by lobster and beef wellington. Can't forget dessert - some were worth it and others were not.

Bottles of wine flowed freely, as did rum punch and when on the islands, the local ipas. My favorite drink was an espresso martini. It was so light and refreshing, and tasty.

Finally, we are home and I did the dreaded, "how many pounds did I gain" dance. I got on the scale and gained about 5-6lbs. It feels like so much more honestly. I am throwing myself into the post-vacay detox - reality. No more cocktails, ipas, rum punches and pinot noirs. Water, coffee and la croixs are in my future. No more bagels, lox and cream cheese, or bread in general. No more pasta dishes and mushroom risotto. Back to eating clean, a lot less carbs and no sugar.

Next trip is to Santa Fe, NM with 100 of my closest lawyer mom friends. I know I'll be indulging again then, and enjoying life. Until then, no carbs, sugar or alcohol and getting my body back to normal. I promise the coffee will keep me sane - no need to be afraid of me. ;)
