The reality of losing 50+lbs - part 2

If I you’ve read Part 1, then you know that I had a major wake up call and the only way to get healthy was to lose weight. Easier said than done.

I worked with a doctor who specializes is medically supervised weight loss. She helped me figure out that the keto diet is what works best for me.

I cut out all sugar, alcohol and most carbs. I started drinking a lot more water. Of course, coffee is still a huge part of my day. But I gave up drinking wine during the week. I’ll drink socially on occasion, but in moderation. I’d rather have my carbs and sugar in the form of wine rather than cake or cookies.

For dinner, I’ll make a protein and lots of veggies with tzatziki sauce (just for me since no one else likes it). Tonight we had grilled sirloin steak, steamed broccoli and the rest of the family had rice. We’ll do chicken, fish, seafood, pork or lamb for dinner most nights. My husband is dairy free, so I don’t make anything with cheese or butter.

Snacks and lunch are Cobb salads, charcuterie, cheese, yogurt, fruit or roasted veggies.  For breakfast I’ll have eggs or high protein, low carb bagels with everything bagel seasoning and cream cheese.

When I’m in a groove, I can stick to this diet with no issues. But then Thanksgiving happened, and before you know it, it’s December. Holiday parties, Christmas dinner, and New Year’s all lead to me eating sugar, carbs and drinking wine.  Hence why I am up 10lbs.

Now I am back to getting down to basics. I am detoxing the sugar right now, and am just starting to feel better. Sugar is a horribly addictive thing. I’ve read it takes 3 weeks to get over it. I always feel awful, they call it the keto flu, when I first get back to the diet/lifestyle.

My goal is to stay strict during the week and relax with moderation on the weekends. We have several trips planned this year and I want to enjoy them without getting sick or feeling awful.

It’s a balancing act I have not yet figured out but am trying to conquer everyday.

Check out Part 3 for how I’ve had to get a whole new wardrobe.

Eating out tips:

  1. I love sushi, but can't eat the rice anymore. So I always get the sashimi platters instead. I also love the different jalapeño hamachi appetizers and spicy tuna sundaes.

  2. Decide if you are going to indulge, will it be wine, bread/pasta or dessert? But you should only pick one.

  3. Breakfast is my go to when we eat out for brunch/lunch. I love omelets with a passion. Get whatever you love, and a side salad or fruit and enjoy!

  4. Check out the menu in advance so you have a plan. Italian? Go for the protein not the pasta. Mexican? Fajitas are great. Chinese? Egg drop soup and a non fried entree without rice.
